Long-Tail Keywords: How to Find and Use Them

The long tail is not a word-count trick

A long-tail keyword is a specific query with relatively low individual search volume. It often contains three or more words, but counting words is only a shortcut. A niche two-word query can belong to the tail, while a popular four-word phrase may not. Low demand and specificity are the defining features, not length alone.

Backlinko and Ahrefs both frame the long tail primarily through search volume. That distinction matters because keyword tools make it tempting to filter for phrases containing four or more words and call the job finished. You will get a long export, but not necessarily a useful one (more precisely, you will get candidates rather than a strategy).

The term comes from the demand curve popularized by Chris Anderson in his October 2004 Wired article, “The Long Tail,” later expanded into a 2006 book. A small number of items sit in the high-demand head. A vast number of low-demand items stretch through the tail.

Search behaves similarly. Backlinko analyzed 306 million US keywords and found that 91.8% received between 1 and 100 monthly searches. The median keyword received just 10 searches per month.

But the flattering number needs its less flattering companion: those 91.8% of distinct keywords represented only about 3.3% of total search volume in the dataset. The top 500 terms alone represented 8.4%.

The tail dominates keyword variety, not raw traffic. Long tailing therefore works as a portfolio strategy. You cover many relevant needs with a controlled set of strong pages; you do not expect one obscure phrase to transform the business.

Why tiny queries can still be valuable

A keyword with 10 searches per month can be valuable. It can also be a distraction with a reassuringly low difficulty score.

The difference is usually intent. Someone searching for “hiking boots” could be browsing brands, researching materials, looking for an image, or preparing to buy. Someone searching for “best waterproof hiking boots for wide feet under $150” has specified the product, weather protection, fit, and budget. That is four constraints before brand preference even enters the decision.

A page can serve that visitor much more precisely. Clearer intent can also produce warmer commercial traffic, but I would not attach a universal conversion percentage to it. The widely repeated claims that long-tail keywords convert at 36%, or 2.5 times better than head terms, do not lead back to a credible primary dataset.

There is another reason not to rely entirely on a fixed keyword database: search language keeps changing.

Ben Gomes, then Google VP of Search, wrote that on Google’s official product blog in 2017. Google Fellow Pandu Nayak reaffirmed the 15% figure in 2019.

This does not mean that 15% of searches are long-tail keywords. It means Google continually receives queries it has never encountered before. That novelty is evidence of an enormous and continually renewing supply of specific phrasing, not a license to invent a “percentage of searches” statistic.

Start with queries you almost rank for

The first place I look is not a paid keyword database. It is the Performance report in Google Search Console.

Filter for queries where your site already receives impressions but ranks roughly on page two or three. These queries have cleared three useful tests: Google knows the URL, the query has demonstrated demand, and the existing page has at least some relevance.

They are not automatic wins. A position of 14 can mean “small content gap,” but it can also mean “Google tested this page and found better answers.” Inspect the results before editing.

Sort the exported queries into three buckets:

  1. Same intent, weak coverage: The existing page should answer the query, but the answer is incomplete, outdated, or buried.
  2. Related topic, distinct intent: The query belongs in the same cluster but requires a separate page or tool.
  3. Irrelevant or accidental: The query does not match the customers, product, or expertise you want to build around.

Most efficient gains come from the first bucket. Improve the relevant section, add a descriptive heading where it helps navigation, replace weak examples, and strengthen the page’s internal links. We saw this directly after migrating seojuice.io to seojuice.com in January 2026. The pages that recovered fastest were not necessarily the ones we rebuilt. They were often pages with existing impressions whose coverage and internal connections we strengthened. It was not a controlled experiment, so I would not turn it into a universal rule, but it reinforced what we see across sites using SEOJuice: improving a relevant URL often beats asking a brand-new URL to start from zero.

That is also why I distrust enormous content plans built from untouched keyword exports (I used to treat the export as the plan; it is not). Search Console gives you evidence about your own site. A third-party difficulty score does not.

Build candidates from real search language

Use Google Autocomplete and related results

Type a seed topic into Google and inspect the suggested completions. Backlinko identifies Autocomplete as a practical source of long-tail ideas because the suggestions reflect searches people make. Modify the seed with attributes, audiences, problems, locations, budgets, and constraints.

For “running shoes,” that might expose variations around terrain, foot shape, weather, injury, price, or race distance. Do not collect every permutation. Look for recurring needs.

People Also Ask boxes are useful for question-shaped searches, while related searches can reveal adjacent terminology absent from your original seed. Treat both as discovery mechanisms rather than volume guarantees.

Mine forums, reviews, Reddit, and Quora

Keyword tools normalize language. Users do not. Discussions and reviews contain the awkward descriptions people use before they know the accepted name for their problem.

That wording is particularly useful for product-led content. Look for repeated constraints, objections, failed alternatives, and comparisons. One unusually phrased comment is an anecdote; the same concern appearing across several discussions deserves investigation (I still want to see it recur before commissioning a page).

Do not assume that a Reddit thread proves search demand. It proves that someone has the problem. Validate the language in Search Console, Google results, Trends, or a keyword database before assigning resources.

Run a selective competitor gap analysis

A competitor gap report is valuable when it exposes a relevant question you missed. It becomes expensive noise when every competitor keyword is treated as an instruction.

Check the results page manually. Is Google rewarding product pages, tutorials, comparison pages, forum discussions, or tools? Can your site satisfy that format credibly? If the competitors rank because they offer something you do not, rewriting their headings will not close the gap.

Semrush recommends competitor gap analysis and its Keyword Magic database as long-tail discovery methods. Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, Google Keyword Planner, and Google Trends can also broaden or validate a candidate list. Their metrics are filters, not publishing decisions.

Ahrefs reports that 94.74% of keywords receive 10 monthly searches or fewer. Tiny estimated volume is normal. It does not prove that a phrase deserves its own URL, and volume estimates become less dependable at precisely this low end.

Group by intent before choosing URLs

This is the decision that makes or breaks long tailing. The dangerous version creates one URL for every phrase. The useful version creates the minimum number of pages needed to satisfy distinct intents.

The practical test is simple: would a searcher benefit from landing on a materially different page? If both phrases require the same explanation, examples, evidence, and next action, they probably belong together (would another result genuinely help the searcher?).

Brian Dean of Backlinko gives a concrete example of how much variation one page can capture: “And because I used a bunch of long tails in my post, it currently ranks in Google for 4.4K different keywords.” That is not a promise that every article will rank for thousands of terms. It demonstrates why a page should be built around a complete intent rather than one exact string.

From what we see across sites on SEOJuice, the opposite failure is common: a graveyard of 200-word pages with slightly different titles and substantially identical answers. Each URL competes for attention, internal links, crawling, and maintenance while none becomes the obvious destination.

Write for the problem, not the exported phrase

Use the primary phrase in the title or a relevant heading when it accurately describes the page. Include close variations where they fit naturally. Then spend most of the page answering the underlying problem.

For question-shaped keywords, give a direct answer near the relevant heading. Follow it with the qualifications and evidence needed to make the answer useful. If the correct response depends on budget, location, product type, or experience level, say so rather than burying the conditions.

An FAQ can cover narrow follow-up questions. It should not become storage for every unused row in the spreadsheet.

Read the finished copy aloud. If the exact keyword sounds unnatural, forcing it into another paragraph will not improve relevance. It will just make the company sound strange.

Connect the tail through internal links

Long-tail pages should not become isolated endpoints. Group them under a broader pillar and connect pages where the relationship helps a reader continue the task.

A pillar about running shoes might link to pages about waterproof trail shoes, shoes for flat feet, sizing, and maintenance. Supporting pages can link back to the pillar and sideways to genuinely related guides. Descriptive anchor text is useful; repeating the same exact-match phrase everywhere is not.

Measure the cluster as well as each headline keyword. Watch for new query variations, page-two terms moving upward, URLs competing for the same query, and relevant pages receiving no internal links. Keyword tracking can show movement, but Search Console remains valuable because it reveals unexpected phrases that were never added to a tracker.

The tail pays off slowly and in aggregate. It is a portfolio, not a lottery ticket.

A practical long-tail workflow

  1. Export page-two and page-three queries from Google Search Console.
  2. Add candidates from Autocomplete, People Also Ask, related searches, discussions, reviews, and competitor gaps.
  3. Remove phrases that do not match your audience, product, or expertise.
  4. Inspect the search results to identify the format and underlying intent.
  5. Group phrases that require substantially the same answer.
  6. Map each group to an existing page, a new page, or a section within a pillar.
  7. Refresh relevant pages before producing near-duplicates.
  8. Write for the complete problem and use keyword variants naturally.
  9. Add contextual internal links between pillars and supporting pages.
  10. Monitor impressions, rankings, overlap, and emerging variations.
  11. Consolidate URLs when two pages turn out to serve the same intent.

Run this process on a small batch first. Ten well-mapped intents will teach you more than 200 generated drafts. Expand after the assumptions survive contact with actual search data.
