AI search optimization means making your content eligible and useful enough to be selected, extracted, and cited inside an AI-generated search result. The relevant surfaces include Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing Copilot, Perplexity, and ChatGPT Search.
The distinction from LLM SEO matters. AI search surfaces use live retrieval: they search, retrieve pages, synthesize an answer, and attach sources. A general chat assistant may answer partly from training data without running a live search. The tactics overlap, but the plumbing does not (and muddled plumbing produces muddled reporting).
Classic ranking remains the price of entry. If an engine cannot crawl, index, or retrieve your page for the relevant query, rewriting the introduction into a perfect 50-word answer will not rescue it.
I think of it as two gates. The page earns retrieval through conventional SEO signals. A passage earns citation by giving the system a relevant, self-contained answer it can safely extract. Ranking without extractability can leave you uncited; extractability without ranking leaves you invisible.
The answer above the links changes user behaviour. We should not soften that because “AI visibility” sounds more appealing than declining clickthrough rates.
Pew Research Center analysed 68,879 Google searches made by 900 U.S. adults in March 2025. Its July 2025 report found that users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits containing an AI summary, compared with 15% of visits without one. A link inside the AI summary received a click in only 1% of visits.
Pew also found that users ended their browsing session on 26% of pages with an AI summary, versus 16% without one. That is not the same metric as keyword CTR, so it should not be combined with the Ahrefs figure below (tempting, but statistically wrong).
Ryan Law and Xibeijia Guan at Ahrefs studied 300,000 keywords using aggregated Google Search Console data. Their April 2025 analysis found that the top-ranking page had a 34.5% lower average CTR on keywords with an AI Overview than on comparable informational keywords without one.

That explanation from Ryan Law, Director of Content Marketing at Ahrefs, matters because it connects the format to the outcome. The summary is not merely another result competing for attention. It is designed to finish at least part of the user’s task before a click occurs.
Pew measured whether user-panel visits produced clicks. Ahrefs measured aggregate keyword CTR from Search Console. Put them in separate columns in your report: one describes browsing behaviour; the other describes keyword performance.
This did not begin with AI Overviews. Rand Fishkin’s 2024 SparkToro study, using Datos clickstream data, found that 58.5% of U.S. Google searches produced no click. Only about 360 of every 1,000 searches sent a click to a non-Google-owned property.
These are 2024 and 2025 snapshots, not permanent conversion constants. Coverage, layouts, and user habits will move. I would not pretend to know the final equilibrium (I doubt anyone does), but the direction is difficult to dismiss: ranking first no longer guarantees the traffic profile it once did.
You still want clicks, particularly for commercial decisions and complex tasks. You now also need to measure whether the answer names or cites you. That exposure can exist without a visit, making brand-mention tracking in AI search a separate measurement problem rather than a substitute for analytics.
Google’s Search Central documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, issuing related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response. Google does not disclose how many searches run, which ones fire for a given query, or the exact source-selection weights.
The practical implication is useful anyway. A broad accounting-software guide might be retrieved for the main question, while a focused section comparing recurring-invoice limits gets cited for one slice of the answer. You are competing to answer both the original query and its component questions.
This is why “Other considerations” is a weak heading. “Does accounting software include recurring invoices?” creates a much cleaner retrieval match. It also forces the writer to make a concrete claim, which is usually where useful content begins.
Google is unusually direct about the relationship between conventional SEO and its AI features:
“There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”
Google also states that established SEO best practices remain relevant. There is no secret AI file, hidden prompt field, or special schema type that guarantees inclusion. Crawlability, indexation, internal links, relevance, and authority still determine whether a page can enter the retrievable pool.
Fix those before rewriting every heading as a question. We migrated SEOJuice from seojuice.io to seojuice.com in January 2026, and the priority was the same: redirects, canonical signals, internal links, and indexation first. Passage polish could not compensate for a broken migration (less glamorous, far more consequential).
A page can be relevant and credible yet remain difficult to cite. The recurring failure we see across sites on SEOJuice is not always missing information; often, the answer exists but is buried beneath setup, repeated definitions, or context inherited from the previous section.
Put a concise, standalone answer directly below a question-led heading. Roughly 40 to 60 words is a useful editorial constraint, not a disclosed Google threshold. It is long enough to state the subject, conclusion, and qualification, but short enough to prevent the answer disappearing into exposition.
Do not confuse “answer first” with “remove nuance.” The opening paragraph should state the conclusion. The paragraphs after it should explain evidence, conditions, exceptions, and implementation. A citation-sized answer gets the passage considered; the supporting depth gives the page a reason to outrank thinner versions.
The extraction test is simple: copy one section into an empty document. Can a reader identify the subject, claim, qualification, and source without seeing anything above it? If not, the passage depends too heavily on context.
Each substantial section should answer one fan-out question or search intent. State the answer immediately, then develop it. Avoid pronouns and transitions that only make sense in sequence, such as “this is why it matters,” unless the section has already named what “this” means.
For example, do not open a schema section with the history of structured data. Open with: “Schema is not required for AI Overview eligibility, but accurate markup can help machines interpret entities and relationships already visible on the page.” Then explain what schema can and cannot do.
Do not turn an entire page into a grid of tiny answers. That makes extraction easy but often strips away the expertise needed to deserve the citation. Short is not automatically clear, and structured is not automatically useful.
The KDD 2024 paper by Aggarwal and colleagues tested generative engine optimization across a 10,000-query benchmark. Adding relevant statistics, credible citations, and quotations was among the strongest approaches, improving source visibility by up to roughly 40%. Keyword stuffing performed poorly.
The caveat is substantial. The GEO study tested GPT-3.5-class generative engines and Perplexity.ai, not Google AI Overviews. Treat it as directional evidence that verifiable writing is easier to reuse, not proof of a 40% Google uplift. Our guide to generative engine optimization examines that distinction in more detail.
In practice, write “Pew Research Center found an 8% click rate in visits with an AI summary” rather than “AI summaries dramatically reduce clicks.” The first gives the system a number, source, date, population, and claim. The second offers an unsupported adjective.
No special structured data is required for Google’s AI features. That does not make schema useless. Markup that matches visible text can reduce ambiguity around entities, products, organizations, authors, and relationships.
Schema describes the page; it does not rehabilitate it. If the answer is vague, unsupported, or inaccessible through the site architecture, adding more JSON-LD is unlikely to solve the real problem.
I trust this sequence more than any fixed content template. Engines do not publish their source-selection weights, and a citation can disappear while the underlying page remains unchanged. Repeating the audit matters more than achieving a supposedly perfect layout once.

Do not collapse AI search performance into one visibility score. At minimum, track conventional ranking, organic clicks, cited URLs, and uncited brand mentions. They answer different questions.

The four combinations are diagnostic. Ranking without citation often points to weak passage matching or extractability. Citation without many clicks may simply reflect the zero-click interface. A brand mention without your URL can indicate that the engine knows the entity through third-party sources. No ranking and no citation means the extraction layer is probably not the first problem to fix.
Google says clicks from result pages containing AI Overviews can be higher quality because visitors spend more time on destination sites. That is Google’s framing, not an independently verified counterweight to the documented CTR losses. Fewer but more qualified visits may be valuable, but only your own conversion data can settle that calculation.

Schema is not an AI citation switch. Google says no special structured data is required for AI Overview or AI Mode eligibility. Accurate schema that matches visible content can still clarify entities and relationships, supporting machine understanding without replacing strong content or conventional SEO.
Google supports controls including nosnippet, data-nosnippet, and max-snippet to limit displayed text. Indexing controls such as noindex and robots.txt affect broader access. Restricting snippets can also reduce your chance of being cited, so this is a visibility trade-off rather than a free way to preserve clicks.
