Experiment Velocity Ratio measures how many SEO tests you actually ship versus how many you planned in a sprint, month, or quarter. It matters because most SEO teams do not have an idea problem; they have a throughput problem, and EVR exposes that fast.
Experiment Velocity Ratio (EVR) is usually calculated as tests shipped / tests planned × 100. If you planned 12 SEO experiments this quarter and launched 9, your EVR is 75%. Simple math. Useful signal.
Why it matters: SEO gains compound, but only after a test goes live. A title tag test stuck in Jira for 3 weeks has produced exactly zero learning, zero lift, and zero leverage. EVR gives SEO leads a clean way to quantify execution drag.
EVR is not a performance metric like CTR uplift or revenue per session. It is an operational metric. It tells you whether your team can move ideas from backlog to production at a predictable rate.
That matters more than many teams admit. In Ahrefs, Semrush, or GSC, you can spot 50 obvious opportunities in an afternoon. Shipping them is the hard part. Teams with a steady 70% to 85% EVR usually learn faster than teams with better ideas and a 30% EVR.
Use it by sprint, by quarter, and by experiment type. Split schema tests, internal linking tests, template copy tests, and technical changes. Otherwise the number gets too flattering. Shipping 8 low-risk meta description updates is not the same as shipping 8 rendering or crawl-path experiments.
Most teams can track EVR with their existing stack. Pull planned and released tickets from Jira, Asana, or ClickUp. Validate launches in Screaming Frog, deployment logs, or your CMS. Then compare shipped count against committed count in Looker Studio, Tableau, or a simple spreadsheet.
If you want cleaner reporting, tag every test with fields for hypothesis, page type, estimated impact, and dependency owner. That lets you see whether your bottleneck is dev time, legal review, localization, or content ops.
Here is the caveat: high EVR does not mean good SEO. It can reward teams for shipping easy, low-impact tests while avoiding harder changes that move revenue. It is also easy to game. Lower the ambition of the roadmap, and EVR magically improves.
Another limitation: SEO tests are not always clean experiments. Google rewrites titles, canonical signals shift, seasonality distorts CTR, and indexing lag can make “shipped” feel finished when the test has barely started. Google's John Mueller has repeatedly said there is no fixed timeline for indexing or ranking changes, which makes any speed metric imperfect.
So pair EVR with outcome metrics. Track win rate, median time to significance, organic sessions, and revenue impact. Use GSC for CTR and query shifts, Screaming Frog for implementation validation, and tools like Ahrefs or Moz for off-page context.
