Statistics go stale. Tools change their pricing. Platforms update their features. Regulations shift. If your article references “2024 data” and it’s now 2026, searchers (and Google) notice.
This is especially brutal for “best of” lists, pricing guides, and anything referencing specific statistics. Most declining pages fall into the “Refresh” category. That’s good news. A refresh takes 2–4 hours. A full rewrite takes a day or more.

For a rewrite, start from the keyword research phase. Re-analyze the SERP, check current intent, outline from scratch. Keep the same URL — you’re preserving whatever backlinks and authority the page has accumulated.
For a consolidation, pick the strongest URL as the survivor. Merge the best content from all pages into that one URL. Set up 301 redirects from the other URLs. This is especially effective when you have 3–4 pages all targeting variations of the same keyword and none of them rank well.
After making changes, track the page for 8–12 weeks. Check weekly for the first month, then biweekly. Record the position, clicks, and impressions at each checkpoint.
Don’t panic if nothing changes in the first week. Google needs to recrawl and reprocess your content. I typically see initial movement within 2–3 weeks, with full recovery (if it’s coming) by week 6–8.

Refresh when the core content is still good but needs updating. The structure works, the angle is right, the audience is the same. You’re adding, improving, and modernizing — not rebuilding.
Rewrite when the entire approach is wrong. The content was written for a keyword intent that no longer exists. The format is wrong (you wrote a list post but the SERP now shows in-depth guides). The information is so outdated that patching it would be more work than starting over.
Redirect when the topic no longer makes sense for your site. If you pivoted from agency services to SaaS and still have blog posts about “how to choose an SEO agency,” those posts aren’t coming back. Redirect them to something relevant and reclaim whatever link equity they carry.
Consolidate when keyword cannibalization is the problem. If you have three articles about “content decay SEO,” “what is content decay,” and “how to fix content decay,” you’re competing with yourself. Merge them into one definitive piece. This usually produces an immediate ranking boost because you’re concentrating authority instead of diluting it.
One more nuance: check the backlink profile before deciding. A page with 40 referring domains deserves more effort than a page with zero. The backlinks are an asset. Preserve them through refreshes and rewrites, or transfer them through redirects. Never just delete a page with backlinks.

Monthly at minimum. Quarterly if you’re using automated monitoring that alerts you to significant drops. The danger zone is going 3+ months without checking — that’s where small declines compound into major traffic losses.
